Massage can help relax muscles and improve circulation. It works by activating the lymphatic system, which can help move excess fluid out of your feet, reducing swelling. Do a little self-massage by stroking the feet toward your heart up to several times a day. Don’t massage so hard that it hurts, but do use firm pressure. The massage may be extra beneficial during or immediately after a bath. Compression socks. Available at your local drug or grocery store, compression socks provide pain relief and prevent fluid collection in your legs, ankles, and feet.
They come in light, medium and heavy weights, so be sure you select a pair that isn’t too tight for your body.
Prop your legs up on an ottoman to help decrease swelling. Various yoga poses, such as lying on the floor with your legs raised and pressed against the wall, can also help.
3. Decrease Salt Intake
One of the main effects that excess salt has on the body is water retention. When there is an excess of salt in your diet, your body holds water in much higher concentrations and your desire to urinate will decrease. That excess water is often stored in your ankles and feet, causing the swelling. Cut down on salty foods and watch the swelling disappear! This is also good for your heart health, which may be causing the swelling in the first place.
4. Make A Splash
Swimming or even floating in water can help with swollen feet and ankles. The pressure from the water can help get things moving in your legs, and floating gives your circulatory system a break from gravity’s constant pull. If you don’t have a pool, check out local gyms to see what they offer.
5. Ice Therapy
When it comes to swelling, the first home remedy that comes handy is ice bath or massage with ice cubes. Ice therapy constricts the blood vessels and reduces swelling of ankles.
- Just wrap a few ice cubes in a piece of cloth and apply on the swollen part.
- Do it for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Alternatively, give an ice bath to the foot.
- Add few ice cubes in a tub and soak your feet in the cold water.
- Don’t do it for more than a couple of minutes at a time.
